Diving in Saba: Pinnacles, Walls and 26 Marked Sites

Most Caribbean islands give you reef. Saba gives you topography.

This is a small volcanic island of the Netherlands Antilles, sitting south of Saint Martin, and the land doesn't bother with a gentle beach slope. It drops. Below the surface that same geology produces sheer underwater cliffs and pinnacles that rise out of deep water without ever reaching the air.

The other half of the appeal is how little the place has been touched. Those drop-offs and seamounts are described as virtually untouched, and the whole island is ringed by the Saba Marine Park, set up specifically to protect the water around it. Twenty-six designated dive spots, one small island. That is the trip.

It is why Saba keeps turning up in conversations about the best diving in the Caribbean, and why divers who go once tend to talk about it for years afterward.

What you'll actually dive

The sites around Saba each offer a unique experience rather than blurring into one long reef. The guide is clear about that: the variety is part of why people rate the island so highly. The names alone tell you what kind of place this is.

  • Diamond Rock
  • Outer Limits
  • Tent Reef, Tent Reef Deep and Tent Reef Wall
  • 3rd Encounter
  • Man o' War shoals
  • Torrens Point
  • Twilight Zone
  • Core Gut
  • Shark shoals
  • Green Island
  • The John
  • Hole in the Corner

Tent Reef alone comes in three flavors, which tells you something about how much there is to explore in one stretch of coast. You can read the full rundown on Wikivoyage's Diving in Saba guide.

Water temperature through the year

Saba sits at roughly 17.6°N, and the sea reflects that. It never really gets cold. The coolest stretch is March, and by late summer and early fall the water is pushing toward 30°C.

Saba sea conditions by month, 2026
MonthSea temperature (°C)Wave height (m)
January271.4
February271.7
March271.7
April271.4
May281.4
June281.4
July291.4
August291.4
September301.1
October301.5
November291.4
December281.6

Wave height stays in a narrow band across the year, with February and March the busiest at 1.7 m and September the calmest at 1.1 m. These figures come from Open-Meteo's marine data for 2026, so treat them as a shape of the year rather than a forecast for your week.

The dive shops

There are three operations on the island, and the guide makes a point of how friendly the people in the local shops are. Two of them are at Fort Bay.

  • Sea Saba Dive Center, Fort Bay — +599 416-2246
  • Saba Deep Dive Center, Fort Bay — +599 416-3347
  • Saba Divers, at Scout's Palace Hotel — +599 416-2740

Three shops for one small island is a good ratio. It also means you have options on who you book with and what the week's rotation looks like. Saba Divers is based at Scout's Palace Hotel, which may matter if you'd rather have the diving on your doorstep.

Planning a trip

Saba is small, which simplifies things. The dive sites surround the island, so you're not choosing between coasts so much as choosing which one you want on a given morning. With 26 marked spots and three shops, a week here doesn't repeat itself much.

Think about what you want out of it. Each site is its own thing, so it's worth asking the shop what the week looks like and letting them build the rotation around the days you have. A short trip still covers plenty of ground.

And the marine park matters here. The protection around Saba is the reason the island still looks the way it does underwater, and it's a good reminder that the reef and the pinnacles are the attraction, not a backdrop.

When you surface from your first dive on one of those pinnacles, log it in Scubaspot while the shape of it is still fresh. Note which of the three Tent Reefs you dove, add your wall shots, and rate the sites against each other so the next diver heading to Saba knows whether to push for Twilight Zone or 3rd Encounter.
